NYU is hiring a familiar construction company to build 181 Mercer Street, the athletic facility/academic building/residence hall slated to replace Coles Gym. Unfortunately, NYU’s history with this construction firm is not a happy one.
According to a project update sent to Greenwich Village residents last week, NYU has hired Turner Construction to manage the construction of the 181 Mercer building. But as NYU prepares to begin work on the new building, the university is also actively suing Turner Construction for $1.4 billion over alleged safety violations during Superstorm Sandy.
“The construction manager, Turner Construction, was selected in the spring of 2015 and continues to work through the project’s schedule and construction means and methods,” reads a February 11 email to people who live near the soon-to-be construction site.
But in October 2015, after NYU chose Turner Construction to manage the 181 Mercer building, the university accused the company of negligence at the NYU Langone medical school.
